I and my extended family just discovered some astounding information about our ancestors (including discovering ancestors we never knew existed!), and are looking both to find out more information and to connect with people whose families hail from the same area. We have ancestors who lived and are buried in Shamokin, Mt. Carmel, and Sunbury. Anyone interested in sharing information or who would like to connect is invited to call me at 301-328-6127.

Thank you to The Forward and Beth Harpaz for a wonderful story of the Kehillat Israel Cemetery and all who made and continue to carry the legacy forward. I was reminded of the day my mother, Shirley (Sovel) Meyers was buried there several years ago. On that day, I was riding with the funeral director in the hearse that carried her coffin. As we entered the cemetery and proceeded toward her burial plot, he remarked (paraphrasing) “Going down this driveway always reminds me of going down the main streets of Shenandoah and Frackville (the neighboring town where I grew up, whose Jewish community shared the cemetery). The names on the headstones are the same ones as the stores on the main streets.”

Proud to continue the Sweet Legacy through my children, and continue the works of my ancestry and lineage. Good website. 🙂

I read today’s (7/12/2023) article in the Forward with interest and, from there, visited the Shenandoah Hebrew Cemetery web site. What a wonderful tribute to the Jewish community. The documentation of obituaries, biographies, and memorials tells the story of a vibrant community, filled with the joys and sorrows of life. The history of the Shenandoah Jewish community is secure.

I'm so delighted that this important part of Jewish history was published by the Forward. Have you reached out to YIVO about archiving the Yiddish minutes? I'm happy to help.

This website is the closest detailed story and picture we have of what was once a thriving Jewish Community in the coal regions. Ian, you have created the legacy our families have hoped for. Cindy, many thanks for your time and help. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
